Install Composer on BlueHost

I’m so spoiled by PERL, I forget the nightmare that is library/dependency management when it comes to PHP. One essential piece of software for PHP library management is Composer:

Get it here: www.getcomposer.org

To install Composer though, you will need SSH terminal access to the Server. To do this, you will first have to “verify” your account to give yourself permission. Log into BlueHost CPanel, and open up “SSH/Shell Access”  under the security bar.

There you will be asked to call in to be verified before you can go ahead and open up the SSH port for your account.

I commend BlueHost for making this easy to do over the phone.

After that you will require a simple SSH client to gain command line access to the server, and, of course the only one anyone ever needs is PuTTY. So get that and log in.

The one and only SSH client: http://www.putty.org/

Afterwards, you will need to write the following commands based on these instructions:

  • mkdir ~/common
  • cd ~/common
  • curl –sS https://getcomposer.org/installer | /ramdisk/php/54/bin/php54-cli
  • echo “alias composer='/ramdisk/php/54/bin/php54-cli ~/common/composer.phar'” >> ~/.bashrc
  • source ~/.bashrc

Open Live Writer is working with Blogger!

openlivewriter-purpleheaderEver since Google stopped supporting older authentication methods – legacy software like “Windows Live Writer” saw their doom, particularly for those of us who use it to write on Blogger.

If you were wondering – that includes my very own Blog.

And as much as I am a fan of online WYSIWYG editors, nothing that Google provided was as smooth and as functional as Windows Live Writer. Unfortunately, Microsoft was no longer interested in maintaining the software as Google has a passion and history of leaving Microsoft products stranded…

So Microsoft wisely abandoned live writer – and made all the source code “Open” for anyone to contribute…

I don’t know when this change was made. and by who. but God Bless the person who updated the Open Live Writer project to use Google’s latest authentication methods.

Open Live Writer works like a charm!
